Pool & Spa Services Glossary for Erie Homeowners

Understanding pool and spa services terminology helps you make informed decisions and communicate effectively with pool & spa companies.

ACPSW

A

Alkalinity

A measure of water's ability to resist pH changes. Total alkalinity should be 80-120 ppm. Proper alkalinity makes pH management easier and protects pool equipment.

Algae

Microscopic plant organisms that turn pool water green, yellow, or black. Warm temperatures and improper chemical balance promote algae growth. Prompt treatment prevents costly cleanup.

C

Chlorine

The primary sanitizer used in pools to kill bacteria and algae. Free chlorine should be maintained at 1-3 ppm. Erie's warm summers accelerate chlorine consumption.

Cartridge Filter

A pool filtration system using pleated cartridges to remove particles. Requires periodic cleaning and replacement. Popular for smaller Erie pools and hot tubs.

P

pH Level

A measure of water acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0-14. Pool water should be maintained between 7.2-7.6. Erie's source water pH varies seasonally and needs regular testing.

Pool Shock

Adding a large dose of chlorine or non-chlorine oxidizer to destroy contaminants, algae, and chloramines. Pools should be shocked weekly during Erie's swimming season.

Pool Heater

A device that warms pool water. Gas heaters heat quickly; heat pumps are more efficient. Erie's shorter swim season makes pool heaters popular for extending use.

S

Skimmer

A built-in device at the pool waterline that draws surface water into the filtration system, removing leaves, insects, and debris before they sink.

Sand Filter

A pool filtration system using sand to trap particles. Requires backwashing to clean. Common in larger Erie residential pools.

Safety Cover

A strong, anchored pool cover designed to support weight, preventing accidental falls. Mesh safety covers also keep debris out during Erie's long off-season.

Spa Jet

A nozzle in a hot tub that mixes air with water to create a therapeutic massage effect. Jets can be adjusted for pressure and direction.

W

Winterization

The process of preparing a pool for Erie's freezing winter: lowering water level, blowing out plumbing lines, adding winter chemicals, and installing a cover.
