Locksmith Services Glossary for Erie Homeowners

Understanding locksmith services terminology helps you make informed decisions and communicate effectively with locksmiths.

BCDKLMPRST

B

Bump Key

A specially cut key used to open pin tumbler locks. Professional locksmiths understand bump-resistant lock options that protect against this technique.

C

Cylinder

The part of the lock containing the keyhole and pin mechanism. Cylinders can be replaced or rekeyed without changing the entire lock assembly.

D

Deadbolt

A lock that extends a solid metal bolt into the door frame. Single-cylinder deadbolts use a key outside and thumb turn inside. The primary security lock for Erie homes.

K

Keyway

The shape of the keyhole that determines which key blanks can be inserted. Different manufacturers use different keyways for security.

L

Lock Grade

ANSI/BHMA lock grades rate security: Grade 1 is commercial/high-security, Grade 2 is heavy-duty residential, Grade 3 is standard residential.

M

Master Key System

A hierarchy of keys where individual keys open specific locks and a master key opens all locks. Used in Erie commercial buildings and multi-unit properties.

Mortise Lock

A lock installed within a pocket cut into the door edge. Common in older Erie homes and commercial buildings. More complex but generally more secure than cylindrical locks.

P

Panic Bar

A horizontal bar across the inside of a commercial door that opens when pushed. Required by fire code for emergency exits in Erie commercial buildings.

R

Rekey

Changing the internal pins of a lock so that old keys no longer work while keeping the same hardware. Cheaper than replacing locks; recommended when moving into a new Erie home.

S

Smart Lock

An electronic lock operated via smartphone, code, or biometrics. Eliminates the risk of frozen keyholes during Erie winters and allows remote access management.

Strike Plate

The metal plate on the door frame that the bolt extends into. Reinforced strike plates with 3-inch screws significantly improve kick-in resistance.

T

Transponder Key

A car key containing a microchip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer. The car will not start without the correct transponder signal.
