Handyman Services Glossary for Erie Homeowners

Understanding handyman services terminology helps you make informed decisions and communicate effectively with handymen.

CDGLPSTW

C

Caulking

Applying a flexible sealant to gaps around windows, doors, tubs, and exterior joints. Prevents air and water infiltration. Erie homes need regular caulk maintenance due to temperature extremes.

D

Drywall Anchor

A fastener inserted into drywall to support hanging objects when no wall stud is available. Toggle bolts support the heaviest loads.

G

GFI/GFCI Outlet

A safety outlet that shuts off when it detects current leakage. Has test and reset buttons. Required in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoors. Handymen can replace standard outlets with GFCIs.

L

Level

A tool used to determine if a surface is perfectly horizontal or vertical. Essential for hanging shelves, pictures, and installing fixtures.

P

P-Trap

The U-shaped pipe under sinks that holds water to block sewer gases. If a sink drains slowly, the P-trap may need cleaning. Handymen commonly service these.

Plumber's Tape

Thin PTFE tape wrapped around pipe threads to create a watertight seal. Used on showerheads, hose connections, and minor plumbing fittings.

Pilot Hole

A small pre-drilled hole that guides a screw and prevents wood from splitting. Particularly important in older Erie homes with dry, brittle woodwork.

S

Stud Finder

An electronic tool that detects wooden studs behind drywall. Essential for securely mounting shelves, TVs, and heavy items.

Shim

A thin wedge used to level or fill gaps during installation of doors, windows, and fixtures. Common in older Erie homes where frames are no longer square.

Storm Window

A secondary window installed over or inside the primary window for additional insulation. Popular in older Erie homes that lack modern double-pane windows.

T

Toggle Bolt

A heavy-duty drywall anchor with spring-loaded wings that open behind the wall. Supports 50-100+ pounds. Ideal for mounting TVs and shelves in drywall.

W

Weatherstripping

Strips of material installed around doors and windows to seal gaps. Reduces drafts and energy loss. Critical for Erie homes during winter.
