Gutter Services Glossary for Erie Homeowners

Understanding gutter services terminology helps you make informed decisions and communicate effectively with gutter companies.

DFGHIKLSU

D

Downspout

The vertical pipe that carries water from gutters to the ground. Erie homes typically need downspouts every 20-30 feet of gutter run.

F

Fascia Mount

The most common gutter mounting method, attaching directly to the fascia board. The fascia must be sound — rot from Erie's moisture is a common issue requiring repair first.

G

Gutter Guard

A cover or screen installed over gutters to prevent leaves and debris from clogging the system. Multiple types available including mesh, reverse curve, and foam.

Gutter Slope

The slight angle gutters are installed at to direct water toward downspouts. Proper slope is about 1/2 inch per 10 feet. Insufficient slope causes standing water.

Gutter Apron

An L-shaped piece of metal installed under roofing material and over the gutter to ensure water flows into the gutter rather than behind it.

H

Half-Round Gutter

A gutter with a semi-circular profile, common on older and historic Erie homes. More expensive than K-style but appropriate for period-correct restoration.

I

Ice Dam

A ridge of ice at the roof edge that prevents meltwater from draining. Clogged gutters worsen ice dams. Proper attic insulation and ventilation are the real solutions.

K

K-Style Gutter

The most common gutter profile in Erie, with a flat bottom and decorative front that resembles crown molding. Available in 5-inch and 6-inch widths.

L

Leaf Screen

A mesh or perforated cover that fits over gutters to block large debris while allowing water through. The most affordable gutter protection option.

S

Seamless Gutters

Gutters formed from a continuous piece of aluminum on-site using a portable machine. No joints except at corners means fewer leaks. The standard for new gutter installation in Erie.

Splash Block

A small concrete or plastic trough placed under a downspout to direct water away from the foundation. A basic but important component for Erie homes.

U

Underground Drain

A buried pipe that carries downspout water away from the foundation. Discharges at a lower point in the yard or into a storm drain. Critical for Erie homes with basement moisture issues.
